5 January Tanana Flats ride

This ride will depart from the boat landing/day park at the end of Chena Pump Road at 10:00 AM and should be back before 3:00 PM. It will be a nice, easy ride of about 50 miles ideal for families and beginning riders. We will ride down the Tanana River for a few miles and then go into the Tanana Flats. The Tanana Flats is a real wilderness right across the Tanana River from Fairbanks. There are no gas stations or lunch counters so riders are advised to have a full gas tank and bring their own lunch. If the temperature is colder than -20 at the airport at 9:00 AM the ride will be cancelled. Riders who do not already have a Ft. Wainwright Recreation Area Pass, should stop by Ft. Wainwright to get one. :sled:

I'll be out chasing the elusive Caribou. Hope you all have a good ride, take some pictures and let us know how it turns out.

Hi Paul,

How are the Flats looking. I got stuck working Sat this year so wont be on many club rides this year and have not been out to the flats this year. Did you guys make it to clear creek butte? Any hazards getting there before I head out there with the Family.

Thanks,
Steve

Yes, we made it to Clear Creek Butte.

If you are looking for deep snow in the big fields, it isn't there yet. If you are just looking for a nice trail ride, the trails are in very good shape, smooth with no overflow and no bear ground except on the climb up the Butte.

The Bonnifield is closed (permanently) along the west side of Clear Creek Butte and has not been opened very far south of the Butte. The trails up Clear Creek are all open. "thumbright:

How far back in did you go ?

Suggest you plan on going all the way to Rosebud and the earlier the better.

Started up the hill to the ridge. Met a couple on a 4-wheeler, if you can imagine, and the girl had shot her first caribou. We and others helped them get un-stuck and went back after that. It was getting dark. We intend to start earlier Saturday.
