BLM seeking public input on White Mountains

Greetings:

The Bureau of Land Management’s Northern Field Office is seeking public
input as it reviews and amends its management plan for the White Mountains
National Recreation Area, a popular 1-million-acre area near Fairbanks.

Resource conditions and visitor use, including summer OHV access, have
changed considerably since the White Mountains Resource Management Plan
was
prepared in 1986. BLM is updating the plan now to help minimize resource
impacts and user conflicts in the future.

Public participation is needed to help identify issues and concerns that
should be addressed in the plan. A scoping meeting will be held on
Wednesday, April 20, 2005, from 6 to 8 PM at the FNSB-Noel Wien Library
located at 1215 Cowles Street in Fairbanks. Come meet members of the BLM
planning team, find out more about the White Mountains and provide
comments.

For more information about the planning process, the White Mountains
National Recreation Area or opportunities for public involvement, contact
Lon Kelly, Outdoor Recreation Planner, at 907-474-2368 or Doug Stockdale,
Public Affairs Specialist at 907-474-2264.

For information about the White Mountains, visit the BLM Northern Field
Office located at 1150 University Avenue in Fairbanks or the Web site:

:( The BLM's website is down nation wide, (including the White Mountains Recreational Area website) and has been for over a week. The local office says they have no idea when it will return. Maybe they should postpone their public meeting until people can access the site. :(

Good idea. When you talked to them, did they have an alternative resource to get the info on the plan's revisions ?? Kind of hard to attend a meeting without knowing what is actually involved in the revision's.

I talked to the BLM again only this time I talked to Doug Stockdale, one of the folks listed on your notice. He is going to try to put a note up here tomorrow. He said this meeting is going to be very informal. Since it starts at 6 there is a pretty good window to stop by and talk to them and pick up info before coming to our meeting. Also they are giving a seminar at the Outdoor Show, Saturday the 23rd, 11-12, at the Carlson Center. Anyone interested in the Whites should check this out so that you can give comments and suggestions as this process goes forward.

Thanks Chuck,

I think this is an important issue for us, considering how much we ride in the White Mtn's.

Let discuss it at Wed meeting as well, atleast to make sure folks are aware of the issue(s) and any possible concerns with changes to our ability to use and ride in the White Mountain Rec Area.
