35 below temperature breaks Fairbanks cold record for Nov 15

#1 Post by john »

The low temperature of 35 below Tuesday at the airport was a record for Nov. 15.

More brisk weather is in store for the days ahead, according to Ted Fathauer of the National Weather Service in Fairbanks.

The old record for Nov. 15 was 33 below, set in 1956. The record for today is 41 below, set in 1969, which Fathauer said is probably out of reach, but not by much.

The forecast for tonight is for a low of 30 to 40 below on the flatlands and 20 below in the hills. The temperatures will moderate somewhat on Thursday and early Friday, he said, but drop down again after that.

The forecast is for low temperatures of 20 to 30 below Thursday night, followed by 35 below Friday night and near 40 below until next week. The high temperatures are expected to be in the 20 to 25 below range.

The cold air settling over this part of Alaska is from the far north, but Fathauer says this early shot of winter is not necessarily a sign of what is to come for the rest of the season.

The National Weather Service says a deep low now over the North Pole is expected to drift our way in the days to come, bringing "another round of very cold temperatures."
