June 15 at Nome Creek

#1 Post by john »

Were going up Friday evening to spend the weekend. Plan is to park down the road to the right just before the bridge.

Anyone else coming out for the weekend ?

Hey John,

We drove out there yesterday. The wash out on the south side of the bridge has been repaired. As you can see the one on the north side has not but they have stockpiled material next to it and I assume they will work on it this week. You can can get around this washout with no problem on a wheeler. The road to the right, the Jeep Road, is fine. We drove out it about a half mile before encountering ice that we didn't want to challenge. Lots of places to camp along it. You can drive across the bridge but the area downstream is still pretty iced up.

Thanks Chuck,

Just saved me a trip out there to see how the Jeep Road was :)

You should come out and join us, at least on Saturday for the ride.

:sympathy: Stoney just got back from 57 mile he said there were road closed signs at steese hwy junction to nome creek
Ignore the signs
The road is good
Just before nome creek bridge there is the road to the right take that road there are several places to park your camper - motor home or truck

The sign says "Road Closed Ahead".

Here's the latest from the Fairbanks BLM website.

http://www.blm.gov/ak/st/en/info/newsro ... pdate.html

"White Mountains National Recreation Area and Steese Highway: Nome Creek Road is washed out at the bridge. Visitor facilities along Nome Creek, including the Mt. Prindle and Ophir Creek campgrounds and the Quartz Creek Trail, are inaccessible as a result. U.S. Creek Road is open as far as the bridge, but turning around is difficult and travel is not advised."

Turning around is not a problem if you go out the Jeep Road. Lots of places to turn around and to camp.

Unfortunately we can't make it as we have friends visiting from out of town then.

Have a good camp out and post pictures,

Chuck

The latest for the BLM: http://www.blm.gov/ak/st/en/prog/nlcs/w ... pdate.html

The US Creek/Nome Creek Road and Nome Creek roads are now open. Rough spots remain on both roads, so drive with caution. The Mt. Prindle and Ophir Creek campgrounds are open as well, although the water wells are not yet functioning. Parts of the Ophir Creek Campground remains blocked by a washout, but some of the sites are ready for use. Cripple Creek Campground (on the Steese Highway) is also open but without drinking water.
