Tanana Flats 22 Dec

#1 Post by paulneva »

Weather permitting, I am going to try to get into the Tanana Flats by way of Clear Creek this Saturday. I am planning on starting from the Chena Pump Park at 1100 and will be back there by 1500. This will be my first ride this winter and I do not know if we will make it all the way in or not.

Paul,

If you are still heading out tomorrow I am up for it. I need to be back NLT 1500 though to keep the household boss happy. Something about a mandatory social function later in the day.... whatever. Where exactly is Chena Pump Park?

Drive to the end of Chena Pump Road. On the left, just before Chena Pump Road starts up the hill, there is a park on the bank of the Tanana River. That's Chena Pump Park (or landing). There is lots of parking and easy river access there.

So it looks like this is the official unofficial ride for the Weekend.

It was a good ride. There were only three of us. We went into the Flats by way of Clear Creek and came out by way of the Salchaket. On the way in, most of the "trails" have been riden on but aren't beat up yet. On the way out we were on trails that hadn't been riden yet.

Did it look like there is a trail going on to Nenana? Over flow any where? How many miles did you cover? Trail in to the mouth of the chena you think? Any open water at Howard Lukes or just down stream?

We saw no open water anywhere. I could feel overflow under the snow in the Salchaketin in a couple places but we didn't actually see any.

We didn't go upstream from the Chena Pump Landing, but there were lots of tracks coming from that direction so I assume a trail is in from the Chena River.

I was very focused on where we were going out on the Tanana, so focused that I can't tell you if there were tracks going on to Nenana or not.

We did 45 miles.
