Letter: If snowmobiling was harmful, why is skiing OK?

#1 Post by john »

Found this archived article online, it was published June 15th and archived 2 days later. From
Snowmobiles were wrongly banned from Carlton Ridge in the '80s, and now Jim Gill, an agent for Bitterroot Trails LLC, wants to blaze new trails through the pristine alpine forests to accommodate Nordic, Alpine and Glade skiers.

My question is, why does he think it’s OK to destroy forests to accommodate skiers, but snowmobilers cannot access the same areas with snowmobiles driving on existing roads that have been OK for 80 years? It’s time to say no to the greedy green groups and money grabbers looking for financial gain at the expense of our public forests and totally ignoring the rights of the rest of us.

Snowmobilers were shut out of the area on Carlton Ridge back in the 1980s because of environmental pressure by radical green groups and a Bitterroot landowner who wanted the area all to himself. This greedy landowner convinced the Forest Service that the road to Carlton Lake was dangerous.

Now this same landowner, who persuaded the Forest Service to close the 100-year-old Jeep trail into Carlton Lake, wants to rape the ridge with huge swaths for ski runs and build a ski area on Carlton Ridge next to the wilderness. He has already dozed huge swaths of timber on his own land with ski runs for all to see from Highway 93, and he wants to do the same on pristine Carlton Ridge.

When snowmobilers and dirt bikers rode the Jeep trail, they left only harmless tracks. It is wrong to let skiers put new, destructive trails in this area now.

Call your Forest Service officials and let them know it’s time to be fair and quit catering to the radical green groups and money mongers who want to use our forests for their own personal playground.
