FST trail drag

1-22-08 Yukon Quest Trail Report

From Fairbanks to Chena Hot Springs there have been both heavy snowfalls (8-12 in.) and significant overflows. We all have enjoyed a much improved snow condition in the Fairbanks area. At the same time, with the above freezing temperatures in certain areas, mushers have reported almost knee-deep water on top of existing overflow glaciers. These conditions have prevented a much-anticipated run by local dog teams over the trail from Chena Hot Springs over Eagle Summit to Central. This is still planned; we will keep you posted on any updates from local musher traffic over Eagle Summit during the next week.

As of Sunday the section from Chena Hot Springs up to Boulder Creek had three major overflows to cross and one section with bad rocks but the tussocks had been 90% filled in. The climb out of Boulder Creek up to Rosebud had a foot of snow cover. From Rosebud Summit to Eagle Summit the trail has been set with a trail drag courtesy of Eric Cosmutto and the Fairbanks Snow Travelers. The trail down the backside of Rosebud is as narrow and steep as ever but it is smooth and well packed currently. There were only minor overflows along Birch Creek until the canoe put-in point at 96 mile on the Steese Highway which has massive overflow around it.

Thanks John the drag works great!
