General Membership Meeting Notes - Feb. 16, 2011

#1 Post by hvhavel »

Unofficial and off-the-cuff...

Everyone missed Larry Morris and Jody. :angle:

So Juan herded the meeting since he graciously accepted the VP position on the board.

We discussed the 100-Mile Loop Trail and the proposed reroute of ARR tracks through North Pole. Please see John's post about this and contact the Alaska Railroad Capital Projects about this. If we lose this trail it is gone forever!

Additionally, snowmachines are still being stolen and either chopped up or destroyed. Two members have had their machines recovered, but they required some major repairs.

Tom is leading hard luck creek ride, though there is some alteration of the original plan - the Hard Luck burn trail is in no shape to be ridden (down trees, pretty much just a fire break with no clearing.) So instead will head down the Hard Luck Creek. Meeting in the same spot as is posted on the Upcoming Rides list.

Rhondy is quickly approaching... March 12 noon to 6pm
Big Daddy's will be there with food, there will be a vendor row, trophies and a bonfire (2 cords of wood!) The Snow Travelers has a spot in a building and there will be heat. This year it is held on the lake (with the woods around providing some wind break) instead of on the windier flats.

There will be an avalanche class March 11, 7-9 pm. The location is still being worked on, but it will be posted as soon as that is set-up. They will also be at Rhondy and on the Sunday afterwards they are doing a full day avalanche class in Delta.

Trek over the top has a full page ad in the latest newsletter and become an associate member.

Don't forget Iron Dog on Feb. 26th! John is still looking for help! Contact him if you are interested.

If I missed anything or got something wrong - I'm sure someone will correct me!

FYI: I have confirmation to hold an avalanche awareness class at the Hotel North Pole Friday March 11th at 7p.m. put on by the North American Outdoor Institute (NAOI). This is a refresher class and is free to attend but an RSVP would be nice.
Also from NAOI:
Join the North America Outdoor Institute for an avalanche beacon training and practice session at the Fairbanks Snow Travelers Snowmobile Rondy. The event is being held at the Chena Lakes Recreation Area.

If you ride in avalanche terrain, you probably carry a beacon, but do you know how to use it? If your friend was caught in an avalanche, would you know how to use your beacon to find them? This is a great training exercise for snowmachiners and anyone who travels in the Alaskan backcountry. We'll go over the beacon, how it works, and introduce the concepts of the signal, coarse, and fine stages of beacon searches.

A $5 donation allows you access to our training area. Bring your own digital beacon or use one of ours. This is a great way to hone your beacon search skills and ask any questions you might have about avalanches.
