BLM Eastern Interior Resource Management Plan/EIS

#1 Post by cleary »

This plan involves a huge area north and east of us all the way to the Canadian Border and "will guide the next 15 to 20 years of BLM management for 6.7 million acres of public land". I haven't taken a close look at it yet, but we all should.

BLM-Alaska Releases Eastern Interior Draft Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement

Anchorage, AK – The Bureau of Land Management in Alaska announced today the release of the Eastern Interior Draft Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (RMP/EIS) for public review and comment. When finalized, the plan will provide future direction for approximately 6.7 million acres of BLM-administered public land, including the White Mountains National Recreation Area, Steese National Conservation Area and Fortymile area, three wild and scenic rivers, and lands in the upper Black River and greater Fairbanks area currently not included in a land use plan.

“The Eastern Interior plan outlines the present and future use of some of the most diverse and unique public lands in Alaska.” said Bud Cribley, BLM-Alaska State Director. “Within the Eastern Interior are areas and resources that are important to our economy, to subsistence, to recreation, and for conservation.”

A 150-day public comment period for the Draft RMP/EIS begins today, Feb. 24, 2012. The public is invited to provide comments about the draft plan and its alternatives.

“Public involvement and participation is critical to the success of this plan and to our ability to make decisions regarding the management of the land and resources within the Eastern Interior” said Cribley. “We hope that people will take this opportunity to add their input and take an active role in decisions that will affect the management of their public lands.”

Comments must be received by July 23, 2012 to be considered. There are three ways the public can submit written comments:
1) In person at public meetings in communities within the planning area. The BLM will announce the meeting dates, times and specific locations through news releases and on the BLM website at http://www.blm.gov/ak,
2) By mail to the BLM Eastern Interior Field Office, Attn: Eastern Interior Draft RMP/EIS, 1150 University Avenue, Fairbanks, AK, 99709, and
3) Online by accessing the BLM’s ePlanning System, at http://www.blm.gov/ak.

For information about the Eastern Interior planning process, visit http://www.blm.gov/ak or contact the BLM at (907) 474-2340 or (800) 437-7021 (within Alaska).

The BLM manages more land – 256 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western States, including 75 million in Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, and cultural resources on the public lands.

Hope others take the time to review and comment.

Some of the options include reducing the trails for motorized use. I know I'll be submitting some kind of comment via their web site, go to

https://www.blm.gov/epl-front-office/pr ... +Statement

For the actual document.

Alternate A seems to be a good choice, No Change
