Pilot with good eyes helps rescue snowmachiner

WASILLA -- A Palmer man had a sharp-eyed pilot to thank for ultimately rescuing him from Kroto Creek, where his snowmachine fell through ice.

Charles Keeter, 41, stood on the snowmachine knee deep for two hours in the creek Sunday morning until he managed to catch the passing pilot's attention with a flare, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Keeter had left Deshka Landing aboard his snowmachine, which fell through the ice over Kroto Creek around 9 a.m., troopers reported.

The unidentified pilot landed and snow shoed an hour to reach Keeter, then contacted the troopers who summoned a helicopter from the 210th Rescue Squadron at Kulis Air National Guard Base. The trooper's Bureau of Wildlife Enforcement also dispatched a fixed-wing aircraft that landed near the scene and whose pilot helped Keeter to safety.

The Air Guard chopper carried Keeter to Deshka Landing. Wet and cold, the rescued snowmachiner refused further medical attention, according to troopers.
