DON'T TRENCH THE TRAILS!

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner letter to the editor:
March 9
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
No snowmachines on ski trails
March 9
To the editor:  The March 9 newspaper included a letter to the editor regarding the use of ski trails on the Tanana River by snowmachiners.
Unfortunately, the same thing is happening on the Two Rivers Ski Trails.
Members of the Two Rivers Ski Club, including myself, are responsible for the grooming and maintenance of the ski trails. This includes grooming, trimming low-hanging branches and fallen trees on the trails. We gladly pay for gas,
oil and maintenance on the equipment to perform this community service. It take a groomer a minimum of two and a half to three hours to prepare the trails for skiing after a snow. The recent heavy snowfall required a preliminary run over the 17 kilometers of trails with just the snowmachine. This was followed by pulling the roller (an 8-foot piece of pipe culvert) over the trails once or twice to groom them, all of which took more than three hours.
Students at the Two Rivers School will start using the trails for cross-country skiing as part of their physical education classes. Community members use the trails for recreation. We are privileged to have such a beautiful set of trails close to Fairbanks, interrupted only by the occasional moose.
We do not appreciate having our skiing interrupted by ruts caused by snowmachines.
To the snowmachine riders who insist on using the trails for riding or pulling a sled, we are requesting — in fact, we are asking you — to stop this practice. Many opportunities exist to ride snowmachines in the area without tearing up our trails.
Thank you.
