The most important piece of equipment you have may be that thing between your ears;

From the News-Miner:

Experts say avalanche danger high in parts of Alaska
by The Associated Press Fairbanks Daily News Miner
Jan 03, 2011 ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska State Troopers are warning the public about increased avalanche danger in some mountainous parts of Alaska because of unseasonably warm temperatures.

According to troopers, avalanche experts say areas classified as dangerous in varying degrees include Turnagain Pass, Cordova, Valdez and Juneau.

Experts say the stress on unstable snow layers below the surface is significant.

Troopers say the danger is so great that avalanche forecasters are not performing their regular field work.

Troopers and avalanche experts are urging the public to avoid backcountry areas.

They say people venturing out should bring safety gear including cell phones and avalanche transceivers and probes. They also recommend that people travel in groups and leave detailed trip plans with someone.

We are planning to have an avalanche class this spring, the same weekend as the Snow Rondy. In the meantime, be careful.
